Our first guests through “campinmygarden”

Some two years ago I made my profile on a new hospitality-site called camp in my garden: http://campinmygarden.com
I almost forgot about it when suddenly this spring I finally got a request.
Yesterday was the day we expected two cyclists from England, two truckers. For them it was their first experience through the system too.
We had a wonderful evening with a lot of talking and laughter and this morning Nigel and Richard sat of direction Ypres, where they booked on a campsite for tonight. They want to visit the “In flanders field-museum” and to witness the Last Post at the Menin gate. After this their plan is to cycle into the Ardennes,to stay a bit in the region of La Roche and than they cycle back towards Waterloo, where ther will be some kind of an reinactment.

It was once again a wonderful experience, so now I hope more requests will come in through what is for us the third site we are “working with” to connect with people from al over the planet.
We have made ourselves two new friends.
Nigel and Richard you are always welcome if you happen to be in the neighbourhood.

When I read the couch request, I immidiately recognised the name and I got exited: its always nice when people come and surf for the second time.
After a long summer of adventures,Josh hitchhiked back home to the UK leaving his beloved tricycle with his friends in Germany. Now he is joining the group again for the summer. He decided to pay us a visit on his way.
We are looking forward meeting him on Wednesday.

???????????????????????????????

He arrived yesterday evening around 18.00 with a man who was so kind to bring him right at our door.
I prepared a Belgian cheese and beer dinner and we spend the whole evening talking about what happened to us all, since we met, more than a year ago.
It seems that we all learned a lot about ourselves and it’s nice to see that the somehow chaotic mind of Josh turned into a more settled mind after a year of experiencing all kind off adventures. He was strugling with a lot of pieces of dreams of his, which he now thinks to bring all together next year, after another summer of learning and adventures.
He learned that he needs a place to call home and people to go home to, although he loves beeing on the road.

One thing is sure: if we ever decide to go cycling in the UK, we will contact Josh and if possible meet him there to do some cycling together.

Some 7 months ago a couchsurfer surfed our couch, the young Frenchman was on a long walk preparing himself for the great adventure he was planning. At the end of the school year he would give up his work in a school in Brittany, give away all his belongings and then start of for a journey without real itinerary or end date…

We kept in touch through the internet by means of his blog: http://carnets-virtuels.org/ and last week he arrived back at our place. He started of in the south of France where his mother lives and since did some 1400 km by foot, some 400 km in a canoe and hitchhiked some 400 km too.

He is planning to go to the pole circle to see some Northern lights. To get there in time for that, he was thinking about buying a cheap bicycle to continue his road towards Denmark.

Last time he visited us he borrowed my mom’s old bicycle and thinking about this inspired me. I had a proposition for Tchey by the time he arrived at our place: I decided to give my mom’s old bike a spirit and a new life. I baptised the bike “Yvonne” after my mother, offered it to Tchey in exchange for the promise to send me pictures from Yvonne from time to time and to look for a worthy new owner for her if the time comes he wouldn’t need the bike anymore. Tchey accepted the offer in gratitude and made Prince Yvonne his bikes new name.

Yesterday Tchey and Prince Yvonne took of for the big adventure…

To be continued.

Tchey and Prince Yvonne arrived early december in Aälborg in Denmark and start having some difficulties continuing in the snow, so maybe the time has arrived for Tchey to look for another compagnon for Prince Yvonne… They did some 1600 km together, not bad at all !!!

Arriving in Denmark in Tönder.

In 2010 we were cycling in Canada, following the Trans Canada Trail , somewhere around Vancouver . After a terrible climb , we descended  Burnaby Mountain. We needed a place to spend the night, and our road book was telling us there should be some campground around.

So when at a stoplight a cyclist was asking us about our ride, we too asked him a question: if he knew of any campground or other sleeping possibility. We immediately understood that the man was willing to offer us his garden to pinch up our tent, but he had to call his wife first to see if she would agree too.

And yes, lucky us…she was.

So the man, called Luis, first showed us where we could go to eat in Burnaby , and drew a plan to his house on a piece of paper.

Later this evening we arrived at these generous people’s house, pitched up our tent, had a nice shower and a drink and a good talk.

In the morning we continued our bike trip with lots of interesting information on the cycle paths on Vancouver Island where we were heading to.

We had exchanged our Face Book profiles and kept in touch, and thanks to FB we learnt a lot more about our friendly hosts in Canada .

It was also through FB that we heard about their plans in 2012 to go to Europe and to try to do some cycling over here.

I didn’t have to think about it and offered them to come and visit us and to stay and plan their trip from starting from our home. I also offered them to use our bikes and our camping gear, so it was really difficult for them to refuse I suppose…

So after some mails we got an agreement. and on the 23rd of may they arrived in Bruges with the train from Germany .

We first visited Bruges of course. And on their second day we adjusted our bikes to their height and did a first little test ride together towards Bruges again, we had the most fabulous weather in weeks.

The next morning Luis and Rachel were off on their own for several days. When they got back we had another visitor: Luisa , also a cyclist who was our guest trough Couch Surfing.

In the morning Luis and Rachel started their second part of their cycle trip, going first to Ypres and it’s lots of war memories, and then towards the Belgian Coast.

When they got back for the second time our grandson Arne was with us for the weekend.

Luis and Rachel invited us out for dinner for the second time and we had a very pleasant evening together.

In this short period of time we became real friends and we are invited back to Canada now…so maybe one day we will have another Canadian Adventure !!!!
